The Gotham Announces Welcome to Cannes Party in Partnership With Variety
by Colin Whitlow on May 14, 2024
Variety and The Gotham Film & Media Institute will return to the Croisette for their annual Welcome to Cannes Party. The event will take place on May 16 at Lucia Restaurant and Beach.
Variety and The Gotham will host executives, talent and filmmakers to kick off the 77th Cannes Film Festival. Variety will honor Ron Howard with the prestigious Profile in Excellence Award and reflect on his remarkable career in the May 7 Variety issue.
Ron Howard established himself as one of our finest film directors thanks to his narrative features like the Oscar-winning “A Beautiful Mind” and “Apollo 13.” But now he is proving himself a force to be reckoned with in the documentary field, as well. His latest documentary, Disney+’s “Jim Henson Idea Man” takes an up close and personal look at the creator of the Muppets and his legacy. Disney Branded Television is a Premier Partner of the party.
Previous Variety Profile in Excellence honorees include PGA and Emmy-winning writer-producer John Wells, EGOT winner Alan Menken, Oscar winner Gwyneth Paltrow and Grammy, Golden Globe and Oscar winner Stephen Schwartz.
“Variety’s annual Welcome to Cannes Party is one of our most exciting events and this year we are very pleased to have Disney Branded Television as a premier partner,” said Dea Lawrence, chief operating and marketing officer at Variety. “The party provides the perfect setting for industry leaders to connect as we kick off Cannes 2024 with The Gotham Film & Media Institute.
“Every year, the Cannes Film Festival provides a powerful reminder of the joy, beauty, and camaraderie of cinema,” said Jeffrey Sharp, Executive Director of The Gotham Film & Media Institute. “We’re thrilled to partner with Variety again on our festive Welcome to Cannes party and to honor Ron, a brilliant filmmaker who has brought us so many remarkable films over the course of a legendary career.”
Avail, an AI-powered research company that builds and deploys bespoke tools at leading entertainment companies, and Bad Math, a membership community that connects independent filmmakers with individual investors, are the event’s Supporting Partners, with Christian Louboutin Beauté serving as the Beauty Partner.
